Grado and surroundings

The history of Grado is closely interwoven with those of two illustrious cities: AquileiaGrado is at the beginning its maritime suburb-, and Venice – for which Grado is a “mother”, having given to it the prestigious title of Patriarchade.

During the V and VI century Grado became a “fortress”, the castrum gradense, in order to be protected from the barbarian invasions and gave shelter to the bishops of Aquileia who built here marvelous churches, that are still the centre of the religious life: the rests of that period are still to be seen in the architecture of the historic centre.

What to visit in the historic centre: Basilica di Sant’Eufemia, Battistero e Lapidario, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Piazza del Municipio, il porto di Grado e la Diga.

The Lagoon of Grado

A maze of canals full of myriad of luxurious islets and outcrops, always different in colours according to the time of the day, and in the midst of them traces of the past, sometimes glorious, sometimes full of misery and uncertainty, bus always respectful and grateful.

The Island of Barbana

The soaring bell tower of the Marian Sanctuary is a beacon in the lagoon landscape. Near the bell tower, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, there is a Sanctuary, built in 582. Towards the year 1000 the Sanctuary was led by the Benedictine Confederation, who left it in 1500 to the Franciscans.

There are boats leaving from the Canale della Schiusa, in the centre of Grado towards Barbana. The trip takes half an hour.

The natural reserve Foce dell’Isonzo

Where birds are at home…
Connected to Grado thanks to the cycle lanes, just a few kilometers from the camping, there is the reserve, extended on a surface of about 2400 Ha. that goes along the last 15 km of the river Isonzo. In the reserve there is a large number of protected birds and other animals and it is really worth a visit.

Within the reserve you find the Isola della Cona, a big visitor centre for guided tours; the duck museum, with all duck species of the reserve; the Ecopark Museum, to make people aware of the eco-sustainable development; bird-watching and guided tours for schools.
It is also possible to organize horseback ridings (only for experts), mountain-bike and boats tours.
